A number of projects, both short-term and long-term, are currently in progress at Aquametrix. These include the following, as examples:

Finfish and Suspended Shellfish Aquaculture: Water Quality Interactions and the Potential for Integrated Culture in Coastal British Columbia.

This study is documenting the downstream water quality impacts of salmon farming activities on suspended shellfish (oysters, scallops, mussels). The 3-year project is assessing the distance at which suspended and dissolved materials, including trace metals and antibiotic residues, become bioavailable to these commercial shellfish species and whether the resultig tissue burden levels pose a human health risk. The results of the study will be examined from an impact assessment persective (environmental fate and effects of fish farm contaminants) as well as from a socio-economic perspective, assessing the potential of finfsh-shellfish polyculture given the spatial and temporal characteristics of these contaminant pathways.
